1st Semi Final twenty20 World Cup 2010 – England crushed Sri Lanka by 7 Wickets

Sri Lanka dream of playing the world twenty20 2010 final were shattered when they have been beaten comprehensively by England in the first semi final played at ST. Lucia. Chasing the modest target of 129 runs for victory England chased down the total in just 16 overs to enter the Final of world twenty20 to be played on 16th of May 2010.

After electing to bat first, Sri Lanka got off to disastrous start loosing their top three batters inside the first six overs of play which included the wicket of in-form Mahela Jayawardne.

Sri Lanka once again tried to recover as they did it against Indians in their last game but this time England bowlers proved to be too clever for Kumar Sangakkara men’s as they kept picking up the wickets at regular interval of time. At one stage they were in horrible situation and looked like they will even not reach 100 run mark but thanks to new lad A.Mathews (58 runs of 45 balls) who helped his team to post at least 129 runs target on the board.

By considering the form of England batsmen, it was always going to be tough for Sri Lankan bowlers to defend such modest target but further they made mess of all that by missing some silly run out opportunity as well as some straight forward chance put down by them, which helped England to get off to flying start.

Both C.Kieswetter (39 runs of 29 balls) and M.Lumb (33 runs of 26 balls) made full use of the chances provided to them by the Sri Lankan fielders and blasted 51 runs in the first six overs of powerplay. From then it was always going to be an easy task for England to achieve the target which they did in end with style.

K.Pietersen (42 runs of 26 balls), once again looked in great touch and remain unbeaten to guide England home comfortably with a seven wicket win over Sri Lanka. Now England will play against the winner of 2nd semi finalist in the Final of ICC World twenty20 on 16th of May at Barbados.

S.Broad was declared Player of the Match for his all-round performance with ball and in the field.

Sri Lanka qualify by knocking out India

Sri Lanka qualified for the World Twenty20 semi-final the second time in a row with a five-wicket last ball win over India that knocked their Asian rivals out of the tournament.

Chamara Kapugedera's six off the final ball saw Sri Lanka to a dramatic win after man-of-the-match Angelo Mathews and captain Kumar Sangakkara both made 46 to revive the innings after a top-order collapse.

India - who lost all their Super Eights matches - had to win by at least 20 runs to keep their own slim semi-final hopes alive.

Having made 163 for five, that meant restricting Sri Lanka to 143 or under.

But their hopes of doing just that ended when Chamara Kapugedera struck a Vinay Kumar full toss for six off the penultimate ball of the 19th over.

Kapugedara repeated the dose next ball and Sri Lanka needed 13 to win off the last over.

Mathews put them in sight by smashing the first ball of the 20th over, from left-arm quick Ashish Nehra for six.

But he was run out off the fifth ball going for a tight single by bowler Nehra's direct hit, having faced 37 balls with three sixes and two fours.

However, with three needed off the last ball, Kapugedera carved Nehra over cover for six to finish on 37 not out.

Sri Lanka were rocked by the early loss of star batsmen Mahela Jayawardene and Sanath Jayasuriya.

Jayawardene's previous scores this tournament were 81, 101, 98 not out and nine. But he was out third ball when he nicked a good length delivery from Nehra and was caught at slip by Yusuf Pathan.

Veteran left-hander Jayasuriya was out for a duck when he pulled Vinay Kumar straight to Dinesh Karthik at deep midwicket.

Tillakaratne Dilshan, player of the tournament at last year's World Twenty20 in England, made 33 at better than a run-a-ball before he swung Pathan to Yuvraj Singh at deep backward square.

But Sangakkara hit back with a 33-ball innings featuring three sixes and two fours before he was bowled middle stump missing a cut shot against Kumar.

Sangakkara's exit left Sri Lanka 105 for four in the 15th over.

Kapugedera was given a reprieve on seven when, looking to guide Nehra through third man he edged behind but a diving Mahendra Singh Dhoni, India's captain and wicketkeeper, couldn't hold the one-handed chance.

Suresh Raina top scored with 63 for India on the ground where he made a century against South Africa earlier in the tournament.

India were well-placed for a big score at 90 for one at the halfway stage but Sri Lanka, led by unorthodox quick Lasith Malinga (two for 25), restricted them to just 73 runs from the second 10 overs.

Twenty20 World Cup 2010 – Australia demolished Sri Lanka to enter semi final

Australia thrashed Sri Lanka in their second super eight game by huge margin of 81 runs to storm into Semi Final of ICC World twenty20 2010. With this big win it has once again open the door for second team to qualify from Group F.

Australia after electing to bat first doesn’t get start they have hoped for and struggling at 67/5 at the end of 11th over but thanks to superb unbeaten partnership between M.Hussey (39 runs of 26 balls) and C.White (85 runs of 49 balls) which guided Australia into commanding position by putting 101 runs in just 54 balls. The duo added 91 runs in the last 7 overs of their inning.

Earlier Sri Lanka spinner S.Randiv impressed everybody and picked up three crucial wickets of Australian inning to put them on back foot.

Sri Lanka started their run chase with in from M.Jayawardne and S.Jayasurya but unfortunately their in-form batsman Jayawardne departed soon after scoring 9 runs fo 6 balls.

Jayawardne dismissal followed by Sangakkara wicket in the space of 6 deliveries put Sri Lanka in bit of trouble. However T.Dilshan (20 runs of 12 balls) and A.Mathews (8 runs of 4 balls) tried to play some aggressive shot during their stay but M.Johson dismissed both of them in same over to put Sri Lanka out of the game. In the end Sri Lanka dismissed for just 87 runs in 16.2 overs.

C.White was declared Man of the Match for his superb unbeaten knock of 85 runs from 49 balls.

Match Summary (Australia Won by 81 Runs)

Australia– 168/5 in 20 Overs

C.White – 85* M.Hussey- 39*

S.Randiv- 4-0-20-3 A.Mathews– 4-0-24-2

Sri Lanka – 87/10 in 16.2 Overs

With this big loss by Sri Lanka they have given India a slight chance of making into the last four.

Now West Indies, Sri Lanka or India any team can qualify for the semi final of ICC World twenty 2010 provided following scenario:

What Sri Lanka needs to do to qualify for Semi Final?

With the big loss against Australia, their net run rate has taken beating and at presently Sri Lanka net run rate is -0.60. The equation for Sri Lanka is not as simple as it could have been, so they not only need to win the game against India but they need to win by bigger margin to give them a chance. If they only manage to beat India by fewer margins then they have to depend on the Australia West Indies game and hope that Australia beat West Indies.

What happened if they lost to India and West Indies lost to Australia, in that case Sri Lanka have to make sure that India must not chase down total in 17.3 overs and if Sri Lanka bat second then they have to make sure that winning margin of India should not be more than 19 runs.

What West Indies needs to do to qualify for Semi Final?

Since they will play 2nd game on 11th May 2010, so they will know the results of Sri Lanka v India game, so depending on that results if India have beaten Sri Lanka then the equation for West Indies is quite simple - win against Australia and go through.

If Sri Lanka wins against India then they have to beat Australia by bigger margin to better their net run rate than SL and by the time match will take place they have full knowledge of mathematical scenario. At presently West Indies NRR is -1.08.

What India needs to do to qualify for Semi Final?

With big loss against Australia in first super eight game their net run rate has also taken beating considerably and at presently their NRR is hovering at -1.58.

The equation for them is also not as easy as for the West Indies or Sri Lanka. Here is the scenario, if they bat first they must beat Sri Lanka by 20 runs or more margins and if they have to chase down the Sri Lankan total then they must chase down in 17.3 overs or less.

Not only that they have to also hope that West Indies loss their game against Australia to make them qualify for the semi final.
